Getting Rid Of An Unwanted Timeshare

Getting rid of an unwanted timeshare is a very daunting task. When looking for a way out, there will be many “solutions” on the internet, but finding the right solution isn’t always easy when there are so many options. One of our clients, John, wrote about his experience searching for the best way to cancel his timeshare, and which solution he chose. The following client story is told from John’s perspective.

My wife and I began evaluating our timeshare contract and the experience that we had when we signed almost 4 years ago. We were enjoying a nice vacation at our 100% paid off unit when the phone rang. We were invited to a presentation. After several hours we were pressured into upgrading our unit to a “better” unit with a new mortgage. One year later -- when using the upgraded unit and feeling like we were swindled -- we met with them and requested a cancellation of the contract and just wanted our paid for unit back. We were told we couldn’t do that. So we continued to pay the monthly mortgage and of course the maintenance fees.

Three years later I began hearing radio commercials about how timeshares are nearly worthless, are nearly impossible to sell and the best thing is just to get out of the contract and cut your losses. I called the radio ad company that I was hearing the most about and got a quote. I also researched the web and found Wesley Financial Group. I was very impressed with the comments from the CEO of Wesley FInancial Group, Chuck McDowell. He had a lot of experience in the timeshare exit field and seemed very sincere.

WFG immediately sent us some information. I called and got a quote which was less than the company advertising on the radio. They answered my questions to my satisfaction and very importantly told me something the other company did not. Not only should we push for cancellation of the contract, but push for a partial or total refund.

I got significant help from Katie, my resolution specialist, in crafting a letter to the timeshare company. I was also coached as to what to say and not to say in any phone conversations. My confidence was gaining strength and I became quite angry the more I thought about how the timeshare company took us to the cleaners! I sent a certified letter and received a cancelation but no refund. I escalated to the supervisor, explaining how we felt we had been pressured into “upgrading” and lied to. He agreed to almost an 80% refund!

Part of the final agreement was that the timeshare company will not place any negative on my credit report. I know not everyone may be as fortunate in fighting the timeshare companies, but put the odds in your favor by working with a good company, like WFG, and be persistent.

I would recommend Wesley Financial Group to anyone who is struggling under a timeshare contract and believe they have been taken advantage of. They have the experience, the expertise and the professional know-how to get you out.
