“It was very confusing. A few different ‘managers’ came by and then we ended up having to sit down for longer than anticipated and nothing was resolved, nothing changed.”
The following is a written account of how Tim & Betty were pressured into a timeshare purchase, and how they saved thousands of dollars per year after contacting Wesley Financial Group, LLC. Names of people have been changed and/or redacted for privacy reasons.
During a casual shopping trip at Bass Pro Shops, Tim and Betty were approached by a salesman about “free” gift cards and a vacation stay in Charleston, SC, if only they would attend a “short 90 minute presentation.”
“The presentation was a very high pressure situation with multiple offers of ‘gifts’ if we decided to purchase...such as always being able to have discounted vacations. We didn’t really need a timeshare and explained that, but every time we tried to leave, they came up with another reason to convince us to buy.
In all, we must have been in that presentation for about three hours. We obviously ended up purchasing the timeshare and were also convinced to buy into a travelers discount program, which allowed special ‘perks’, but we still aren’t sure what all was supposed to be included in that.”
After the couple purchased the timeshare, it was a little while before they were able to use their points, due to personal and professional obligations that got in the way. When the time came for them to book their first vacation using the timeshare option, the timeshare company told the couple something that they were not even aware of: their timeshare points had expired, and those points do not “roll over.”
“It wasn’t explained to us at the time of purchase that our points expired and that they only came 5,000 at a time every other year. We thought that we were purchasing 10,000 points per year.
Additionally, I’ve looked into using the timeshare and there have been blackout periods that limited our availability to book vacations.”
Feeling stuck, Tim and Betty knew they needed to find a way out. The bills, from not only the timeshare debacle but also other areas of their lives, were piling up.
“The bottom line is that this whole process has been a series of frustrations, lies and confusion. This timeshare will continue to be a financial burden for our family. We spend just over $3,000 a year on this timeshare that we can never even use. If we freed up that money, we could actually afford a vacation and the new roof that our house now needs.”
