How A Timeshare Depleted A Couple’s Entire Savings

Many times when people buy a timeshare property, they are left completely oblivious to the maintenance fees that are attached to it. These hidden fees are nothing to gloss over either, as they can become quite the expense. Rick and Savannah S. learned this the hard way.

Here is the couple’s story on how they got involved with a timeshare company to begin with and also the damage they sustained from owning a property. We hope sharing their experiences will shed a light on the deceptive sales tactics used within the timeshare industry. Names of people and companies have been changed or omitted due to privacy concerns.

“Any time we ever met with timeshare resort representatives, there were gifts involved. This seemed like a nice bonus the first couple of times before we finally realized it was all a part of their schemes to easily upsell us. Looking back at our first encounter with them, we remembered receiving many gifts just for showing up and listening to them.”

During Rick and Savannah’s first meeting with timeshare sales representatives, they received a free resort stay along with a number of gift cards just for going to the sales presentation. It seems this is the only way these resorts can get people to listen to their sales pitches: bribery.

“When they were selling us on the timeshare property, maintenance fees were never brought up. My husband and I did not know to even ask about them because we were not familiar with timeshares whatsoever. So when we got the first bill for them, we did not think too much of it and just paid them. It was not until a couple of years later when we noticed that they had been increasing the price annually.”

This is not an uncommon occurrence in the timeshare industry. For some reason, timeshare salespeople believe that these fees are not that important or even worth mentioning to prospective clients. Perhaps the reason is that they know they would miss out on completing most sales if this knowledge was known beforehand.

“Honestly, we would have never agreed to purchase a timeshare if we knew about these fees and how expensive they would end up being. We were timeshare owners for just five years and the fees managed to increase each one of those years. We could just no longer keep up. The mortgage was already hitting us hard, but the maintenance fees were completely unexpected and pushed us over the edge into debt. Our savings was lost and the bills kept rolling in.”

Owning a vacation property should not be like this. Rick and Savannah were smart to pursue a way out of their agreement after just a few years. They heard about Wesley Financial Group, LLC due to word of mouth and they did not hesitate to reach out. We are now happy to announce the full cancellation of Rick and Savannah’s timeshare agreement.* Gone are the dreadful days of receiving maintenance fee bills in the mail for this family.
