Carla S. Felt Stranded In A Timeshare She Didn’t Buy

After Carla inherited a timeshare through her marriage, she felt stranded. Below includes a written account from Carla on her timeshare experience. “My husband and his late wife bought a timeshare several years ago. After she passed away and I married my husband, I found it unbelievably difficult to maneuver this timeshare. My husband has some memory issues related to dementia and he is completely lost when it comes to trying to work with the timeshare company. So, I was in a lose-lose situation. I am well educated, but I found myself many times trying to understand the craziness of instructions we were given by representatives of the timeshare. It was so obvious that they wanted us confused. I did not want my name on the deed, but could not get out of the timeshare.”

The confusion continued for Carla. After multiple attempts of trying to reach out to the management group, Carla was met with more sales pitches about how she needed to buy more in order to clear things up. 

“I tried to get an idea of what the timeshare was all about since I was new to the idea. They would try to get us to put my name on the deed and buy more points. They told us that if we didn't buy more points we were going to end up losing the points we had. At one point, they told my husband that he didn't need to listen to me since my name wasn't on the deed. When he wouldn't buy more points and basically told them to take a hike, we had to walk back to our apartment in over 100 degree weather. It was a miserable experience.”

Feeling like the timeshare sales team tried to take advantage of her husband’s condition, Carla was fed up with their antics.

“Their obvious manipulation of older adults is disgraceful. I just don’t understand how they’re allowed to get away with it.”
