Danielle and her husband love to travel with their two daughters, but when they were tricked into buying a timeshare, vacationing suddenly became very convoluted. The following includes excerpts from Danielle and her timeshare experience. “I felt like I was taken advantage of. They promised so many great vacations and destinations. They even promised us pre-elite status – this allows us to book two years out, but it ended up being that pre-elite status didn’t actually exist. So I had to book my vacations within six months and I couldn’t even get availability at the hotel I had originally wanted to stay with. I was very upset because I was paying all this money to come find out that it's worth nothing.”
When Danielle reflects on her timeshare presentation, she remembers the sales staff painting a vivid picture of their prospective unit.
“They told us we would be able to go anywhere any time and travel with our family and stay in amazing two or three-bedroom suites. They sold me on being able to book two years out. I thought I'd have an advantage over most people who had to book six months out. But this whole pre-elite thing is a lie. It didn't exist. They also said that we can leave it to our kids, but they don't tell you that it's actually leaving your kids with the burden of debt. They also told me that I could save so much money if I got a personal loan, but that turned out to be a lie as well.”
Looking for a way out of the mess standing in front of her, Danielle attempted to reach out to a cancellation company. Unfortunately for Danielle, the company she reached out to seemingly operated in unethical ways.
“I called this company to get out of my timeshare but they wanted way more money than I could even fathom. They also asked for a large chunk of it upfront. When I told them I couldn’t afford it, they suggested I take out money from my 401k. To me that was a major red flag.”
