Eloise K. Spent Thousands of Dollars on a Timeshare She Could Hardly Use

When Eloise and her late husband purchased a timeshare during their visit to Hawaii in the early 2000’s, she imagined being able to take plenty of family vacations to Hawaii and other exotic locations for a great deal. What happened after the purchase, though, didn’t go nearly as she’d planned.

The following is a firsthand, written account about Eloise's deceptive timeshare experience. We hope her story will help shed a light on the distrustful practices of the timeshare sales industry. Names have been changed or redacted due to privacy concerns.

Eloise and her late husband took their dream vacation to Hawaii in November 2002. They’d been saving money and time at work for years to make this trip a reality, but the resort they walked into when they arrived on the Hawaiian Islands was anything but enticing and relaxing.

After one night, the couple decided to find a different place to stay because of their current resort’s terrible conditions. What Eloise and her late husband stumbled upon was a very nice resort operated by a timeshare vacation ownership company, and all they had to do was attend a short presentation in exchange for a complimentary night in the new resort.

When the couple arrived at the presentation, Eloise recalls that it was somewhat pressuresome, but overall, they were initially so impressed with the amenities and conditions of the new resort building that they decided to purchase a timeshare vacation option with the company.

“The presentation lasted about an hour and a half, and during that time the salesman explained that the two-bedroom ocean view units we were discussing would give us the flexibility of booking our vacations whenever it was convenient because those two weeks were not fixed but floating. [The salesman] also said that we could accumulate some unused weeks for the future for family vacations with our children.”

Unfortunately, the unthinkable happened less than one year after Eloise returned from that lovely Hawaiian vacation. Her husband passed away in August of the next year, so he was never able to actually enjoy the timeshare with his wife, Eloise. Since this time, Eloise has had nothing but issues trying to reserve a timeshare vacation in Hawaii, much less anywhere else that once offered ‘flexibility.’

“After my husband passed away, my planned usage of the timeshare changed because he was my primary travelling partner. Instead of travelling with my spouse, the family started looking for ways to use the property for family vacations with my three adult kids and their families. I would often save some weeks so that we could rent three units for a week. As challenging as it was to coordinate the family’s schedule, it was just as challenging to find a date that three units would be available at the same time so we could actually use it.”

Several years of trying to maintain a scheduled family vacation led to pure frustration and total exhaustion for Eloise. As she aged, Eloise wanted to enjoy her golden years with friends and family closer to home. Naturally, though, her options to exit the timeshare are limited and the timeshare company knows that this timeshare option (along with the annual maintenance fees) will be passed down to her children at some point.

Thankfully, Eloise heard an advertisement on the radio for Wesley Financial Group, LLC (WFG), so she decided to reach out to us here at WFG. After some persistence on her part for a few months, Eloise is now timeshare free! *
