The following is a written account of how Joan L. was deceived into making a timeshare purchase. Names of people have been changed and/or redacted for privacy reasons.
Joan and her friend were attending a Home & Garden Show in San Antonio, Texas, when they were approached by a timeshare salesperson. The offer was enticing, and who doesn’t enjoy an obligation-free vacation?
“The salesman offered me a 3 day, 2 night stay at their resort if I attended a presentation (no obligation). At the presentation, I was handed a tablet and asked to fill out the information and sign. I later found out that this was how they accessed my credit score!”
When the sales people informed Joan of her great credit rating and eligibility for some “great timeshare packages,” they began taking her through options. They showed her forms that she could barely see on their computer screens and didn’t have time to read, given their intense sales pressure and timing. Furthermore, Joan was very persistent in denying the many offers from the salesmen, because she left her vacation planning details to her travel agent. She honestly preferred it this way.
“I told them I have a travel agent who coordinates all my trips when I can get away. I do it this way because I am so busy that I don’t honestly travel a lot.
They would constantly keep coming back and adding incentives--extra travel points, discounts for purchases made while traveling, etc. On top of these incentives, they told me that maintenance fees had not gone up in five years and would not be going up. This whole thing went on for several hours. I finally agreed and was sent to a small office. The contract was on a small computer, and they didn’t give me a lot of time to read through it.”
I was never told I would have to make my own reservations online. My travel agent told me that she couldn’t help me book and that I would have to do it myself. So once I signed everything and tried to book, they told me nothing was available for nearly 1 year later! I reached out to the reservation department on multiple occasions and all they kept telling me was that nothing is available.
From day one it has been nothing but stress. I have spent countless hours trying to make reservations. On several occasions when I tried to book, they told me I couldn’t book because my ‘account had not been credited’, even though I had receipts showing deposit!”
