John & Candice Loved the Idea of a Timeshare, but Reality Soon Showed Its True Colors

John and Candice were sold on the idea that their timeshare could be “flexible” and they could vacation anywhere. While their purchase of the timeshare was fairly simple, the couple soon discovered the complexities that come with timeshare ownership. 

The following is a written account from John and Candice W. on their time spent as timeshare owners and why they regret every bit of it. When they attended a timeshare sales presentation in Scottsdale, Arizona, John and Candice were told a plethora of exaggerated lies about owning a piece of paradise in their timeshare purchase. 

“The salesman focused his efforts on the idea of timeshare exchanges. He really talked up the ability to exchange our ‘cheaper’ points with a lesser known company, like them, in order to stay in higher end timeshare resorts.

We were also given an additional three day, two night stay anywhere in their global network for free, which we were never able to use! We were definitely pressured, but when we showed interest they talked up the exchange angle. We really thought it was a great deal because he told us the points upgrade package wouldn’t be available after that meeting.”

The couple purchased their original timeshare package, but they soon felt that the prices they were paying monthly for their timeshare weren’t worth the payoff. They successfully used the timeshare points options a few times, but they were left with more questions after each vacation. 

“Unless you have complete and utter flexibility on the dates of travel and couldn’t care less where you go, it was not that easy. We could see the desired locations, (properties where they did business or accepted exchanges) but our desired locations and dates were never available. 

On the couple of occasions where we stayed [timeshare resort], we were less than impressed with the condition of the properties. They were just worn out and in need of renovations, which led us to question where the maintenance fees were being spent.”
