Ron & Diane B. Didn’t Know Their Timeshare Was So Restrictive

When Ron and Diane saw an advertisement for free gifts and a great experience at a new resort in Branson, the couple decided to give it a try since they lived so close to Branson and wanted a weekend getaway. Little did they know, this weekend getaway would cost them years of financial stress. 

The following is a firsthand, written account about Ron and Diane’s continuously frustrating timeshare experience. We hope the couple’s story will help shed a light on the deceptive practices of the timeshare sales industry. Names have been changed or redacted due to privacy concerns. 

Ron and Dianne paid little attention to the short meeting they had to attend; rather, they were obviously focused on the excitement of free gifts and a great weekend in Branson, Missouri. 

So when they attended the presentation about a timeshare vacation option, the couple was completely caught off guard by the intense sales pressure. They also had little knowledge of the timeshare industry itself, which is the best case scenario for those pesky timeshare salesmen. 

“The idea of vacationing at what appeared to be a very upscale resort appealed to us. Especially since we would also be members of an international members club. After 3-4 hours of high pressure sales tactics, we just wanted to get out of there. They just kept offering different plans. We finally agreed to the cheapest plan, which they were not very happy about.”

Ron and Diane had a few enjoyable vacations using their timeshare, but as time went on they found it more and more difficult to use their available points on any sort of decent vacation. For the thousands of dollars per year that they were paying, you’d think that they could use the timeshare whenever they’d like, right? Yes, you’d think, but that wasn’t the case for Ron and Diane, nor is it for so many other timeshare owners.

Many timeshare companies will discourage the use of their timeshare units from current owners in order to squeeze more money out of them by purchasing more “points.” Whatever the case, many timeshare owners leave their initial timeshare sales meeting believing that the points system can be flexible and ultimately allow them better vacation options, when this is simply never the case. 

Although Ron and Diane managed to get a few uses out of their timeshare, the couple believes that they wasted their money on something that didn’t have the value they thought it would. The lack of availability is what Diane recalls most. 

“The major issue is being unable to book vacations when and where it’s convenient for us. It seems everything is always booked up, even places close to us. And everytime we’re able to schedule a vacation, we’re expected to attend another sales pitch when we check in. 

You find out not only seasons, but days of the week and holidays all have their own point requirements and availability.”

Feeling fed up with owning their timeshare, the couple began looking for an exit strategy. They wanted to avoid draining their financial resources, as well as leaving this terrible timeshare to their children.
