Life Kept Jessie & Karen B. Away From Their Timeshare

Between handling the stress of losing his father and running his own business, Jessie was overwhelmed with life. His wife, Karen, decided to book their family a trip to Aruba so that they could unwind for a few days. Ultimately, though, this trip would cause them more stress and frustration as they discovered their timeshare option was too good to be true.

The following is a first-hand account from Jessie and Karen on their terrible experience with their timeshare. We hope it will shed some light on the deceitful ploys the industry utilizes on innocent people. Names and locations have been changed and/or redacted for privacy reasons.

Jessie and Karen’s timeshare meeting didn’t happen immediately after they arrived on their vacation because the timeshare representative approached them twice about attending the sales presentation. Unfortunately for them, this type of consistent pressure before the meeting was just the beginning of their experience with the timeshare company. 

“When we arrived [at the meeting] a day or so later, we were overwhelmed with the new facility and luxury; not to mention the amount of information they gave us. The idea sounded good, and even though it did seem that we were being rushed to sign the papers, I thought it would be a good investment.”

The couple didn’t completely understand the idea of timeshare, so they certainly weren’t aware that they were paying their exorbitant fees along with dozens of other ‘owners.’ They did understand that they only had two weeks per year to use the facility, but couldn’t fully believe  the amount of other foot traffic coming through the unit as well as the other deceptive sales tactics being used by the timeshare sales company. 

“We certainly don’t feel we’ve gotten our money’s worth of enjoyment out of our timeshares. We were led to believe that there would be a secondary market for the units so that we could sell or rent out our timeshares. It hasn’t been as convenient as they originally made it sound, and we now realize that most of our money has gone to waste with this timeshare.

Our children are also married now, but none of them are interested in obtaining our timeshares. We don’t have any supplemental retirement benefits and rely solely on Social Security and our life savings. My health is getting worse and my wife doesn’t want to travel alone, so we don’t have any use for this timeshare anymore.”
