Emma and Macy Faced Intense Pressure Before and After Their Timeshare Purchase

Emma and Macy were enjoying a relaxing, scenic vacation in the Smoky Mountain town of Gatlinburg. When walking the streets one day, they were approached and offered a free lunch and tickets to a local attraction if they attended a short presentation that would only take about 90 minutes of their day. 

Below is a written account of how Emma and Macy were pressured into purchasing a timeshare. Names of people have been changed and/or redacted for privacy reasons. 

“After their presentation, we told them we were not interested several times. Eventually, they told us to wait and they would go check with “someone” about increasing our points. Several of them then came back and told us that for today only we could get an extra 100,000 points to be used within the following year.

We then told them no again, and we also told them that our family was waiting and that we had to go. The sales representative said that signing up would only take a few minutes longer and that it was the right package for us and our family. This pressure, and the amount of time we’d already been there, was enough to get us to sign the paperwork without even reading.”

The reality of the situation didn’t settle in until they’d gotten home and the friends realized the weight of the decision they’d just made under that hours-long sales meeting. They didn’t cancel their timeshare in the allotted window after signing the paperwork (details of which the friends claim weren’t even shared with them during the meeting). 

Now stuck with their timeshare, the friends have been paying the mortgage and fees on it for several years. 

“We haven’t been able to use the timeshare because of not having enough points and with a high credit card balance, we cannot afford the fees involved with the vacation. We are paying a mortgage, a monthly payment on the amount borrowed for the original down payment, plus a regular maintenance fee. 

We have 300,000 points to use this year, but we needed 325,000 points for a five day vacation. This is absurd! Due to our age we have only a few more years to comfortably use this.”
