Andrew’s Dream Vacation Turned Into A Money Pit

Andrew B. was attending a golf tournament years ago when he put his name in a drawing to win a “free vacation.” Months later, he received a call from a timeshare company telling him that he had won the prize. The only catch was he and his family would have to attend a short presentation while at the resort. Can you guess what happened next?

Below is a written account from Andrew where he describes how troublesome his experiences with this timeshare company were. His story puts a light on a longstanding problem within the timeshare industry that continues to put innocent people at risk. “The resort first lured me in with the promise of a free vacation and all I had to do was attend this presentation, but it only turned out to be a high-pressure sales scheme. They touted on and on about all the benefits of owning a timeshare and why it would be perfect for me. It was supposed to save us so much money every year and I was gullible enough to believe them.”

The timeshare salespeople led Andrew and his family to believe that they would be able to vacation anywhere at any time, but in reality, they were sold the package with the lowest amount of points. This greatly impacted how they would be able to use their timeshare.

“I remember they showed me like a thousand photos of different resorts I’d be able to go to with this timeshare. Well, that turned out to not be true at all. During their sales pitch, they never once mentioned anything about needing points to be able to book the resorts. And I ended up having the least amount of points you could possibly have. This kept me from ever using the timeshare for the first several years after buying it.”

A few years had passed and Andrew’s disappointment with the timeshare had only grown. He decided to reach out to the resort to fix this issue. This is when Andrew was encouraged to go back for another presentation, this time disguised as an “owner’s meeting.”

“When I went in for this owner’s meeting I expected a different experience from before but no, it was the exact same. Again it just felt like a big sales pitch. This time for a timeshare upgrade which was costing just as much as the initial timeshare, which I was still paying off. They started to guilt me by saying I owed this to my family after not being able to go on vacations for the past few years. I ended up agreeing to the upgrade and we were able to go on a couple of trips, but it was still not easy to use.“

Andrew was finally able to use his timeshare, but at what cost? Now he was essentially paying for two timeshare mortgages and on top of that were the maintenance fees that only grew higher and higher each year. Andrew found himself in quite a financial burden. 

Not willing to continue to pay these outrageous amounts while receiving hardly any benefits in return, Andrew began researching for a way out of his timeshare.
