Chad and Marla F. were only told of a โgroup tourโ when they agreed to attend in exchange for plenty of fancy experiences and gifts such as a limousine ride and tickets to the zoo. They didnโt think much of the tour, more so of the exciting experiences they could have while on their vacation! This โgroup tourโ would turn out to be much more than theyโd ever expected to endure while on a family vacation.
Below is a written account of the timeshare debacle that Chad and Marlaโs family experienced. We hope their written account will enlighten some of the tactics that the timeshare industry often uses on good, unsuspecting people. Names of people have been changed and/or redacted for privacy reasons.
Chad and Marla agreed to attend a timeshare sales presentation in exchange for some extravagant โfreeโ prizes. When they got to the group presentation (that they didnโt know prior was actually a timeshare sales pitch), they spent well over three hours in the presentation. Another representative came over when they arrived to carry the kids over to the play area nearby so that they could be more focused on the presentation. Their children, along with Chadโs current health condition at the time of the meeting, were some of the main selling points that the sales representatives made sure to address during the presentation.
โEach time we said no to their offer, another individual came up and started talking to us again and we felt so pressured. By the end, we were so tired from everything that we were ready to just be done with it. The amount of constant pressure to sign for a timeshare was unbelievable. We had never experienced anything like this before,โ writes Marla.
Chad and Marla eventually caved to the pressure and purchased their timeshare option. They tried to cancel their purchase shortly after returning home from their vacation, but by then it was too late. They were outside the cancellation window legally allowed, and so they were stuck with a timeshare they later found out was practically unusable for their family.
The couple were told at the meeting that payments would begin drafting from their bank account two months from the date of the purchase, but they soon discovered that this, too, was another lie from the timeshare salesmen.
โImmediately after we got home from vacation, they started trying to take money from our accounts. They said the first payment would be due two months later and that the fees we would pay for the timeshare would only come out of our account once a year.โ
Furthermore, when the couple tried to plan their family vacation a little while after this presentation, they also discovered that booking this timeshare wasnโt as easy as they thought during the meeting.
โThey told us when weโd first be able to use it and the date was two years out. That was ONLY if someone else at that point wasnโt using it!โ
