Katie & Chad A. Sat Through Multiple Timeshare Sales Pitches

Katie first sat through a timeshare sales presentation with her mother when her mother was offered tickets to a theme park in Florida. Once they arrived and sat through the hours-long presentation, Katie had signed up for an every-other-year timeshare and her mother had purchased a different type of timeshare. Even though she’d made the purchase, Katie wanted her then-fiance to hear firsthand and better understand how their timeshare worked, and so the couple set up a meeting with a different timeshare sales representative approximately one year later.

The following written account details Katie and Chad’s timeshare debacle. We hope their story helps expose the backward tactics the timeshare industry uses on innocent clients everyday. The names of people and companies have been changed and/or redacted for privacy concerns.

Katie’s original timeshare purchase left her fiance, Chad, with quite a few more questions about the timeshare option itself and just how they could utilize it for their family vacations. So the couple scheduled a “refresher” presentation with a separate sales representative, and Katie immediately sensed the pressure of the meeting from the representative.

“[The sales representative] was very nice, but he went right into what we did wrong with the initial signing and he seemed frazzled about it. He said he had previously looked at our contract and that we didn’t actually sign up for every year. We’d only signed up for every even year and that we should sign up for the odd years, too, to get the best bang for our buck. I just wanted one vacation a year, and it sounded like he was saying we had to sign up for two weeks a year to get the better advantage.”

There was a lot of back and forth between the couple and the timeshare sales representative throughout the meeting. The air quickly filled with tension, and the pressure and type of talk coming from the sales representative began to get to Katie during the meeting.

“I was so overwhelmed during the meeting that I started to tear up right there because my fiance trusted me with this decision. I was being told I did the wrong thing in front of him and everyone, and that what I really wanted was going to be so much more expensive. I was embarrassed, but of course, Jonathan was really nice and broke down why this was financially beneficial..so we changed to the option where we could reserve every year.”

They were told during the “refresher” presentation that they could rent out their timeshare if they chose not to reserve it that particular year, and so the couple attempted to do this through a third party “marketing” company. The couple soon realized that this was another scam, and they lost an extra $1,800 related to this timeshare. They felt trapped, and they were tired of wasting money on something that could’ve gone toward their wedding instead. Furthermore, Katie laid awake at night wondering how this timeshare obligation would affect their retirement if the outrageous fees continued.

“We were trying to make it work, but I began thinking about after retirement. What happens when we retire and have limited income and are expected to pay $1,600 in maintenance fees every year? And that got me thinking how much we’ve already paid and we still haven’t been able to enjoy it!”

After some research out of pure frustration, Katie found Wesley Financial Group, LLC (WFG), online. She reached out to our team and the couple was qualified for our timeshare cancellation services. With assistance from WFG, Katie and Chad are now free of their timeshare burden!*
