James and Faye B. originally met when they were both serving in the United States Air Force together. Years later, they were married and were now retiring from their military service. This is when they were approached by a salesman offering them a free cruise trip.
A cruise sounded like a great way for the couple to celebrate their retirement, plus it was free so how could they refuse it. Looking back though, James and Faye certainly feel different about that. Below, both of them recount their terrifying timeshare experience and detail why they would not wish the same on anyone else. Names are changed due to privacy concerns.
“The only reason we agreed to go to the sales presentation was that they said we had to if we wanted to redeem our free cruise trip. They said it was short and nothing too serious. Well, both of those were lies. It lasted for close to 5 hours and at the end of it, they asked if we wanted to sign up. We were honest and told them we were just there to get our cruise tickets and not interested in buying. Now they said we can’t get the cruise unless we sign up for a timeshare.”
When James and Faye were invited to this resort to attend the presentation, they were assured they would receive free tickets to a cruise by doing so. Now the salespeople were using this incentive to dangle over the couple’s heads in order to squeeze more out of them.
“So we decided to look at what all it was they were offering. They made it all out to seem like a good deal too. My wife and I were under the impression we could basically vacation whenever and wherever we wanted. The company had resorts all over the world that they showed us pictures of and said we’d be able to go to all these places.”
James and Faye were both missing their traveling days from the time they served in the Air Force and were interested in getting back out there. Then near the end of the meeting, the salespeople claimed to give the couple a military discount and reduced the total price by half.
“Once they dropped the price, we were convinced to sign up. We were even a bit excited. We had a cruise trip and unlimited places to choose from for our next vacation. Or so we thought. We tried for two whole years to redeem that free cruise, but they just kept putting us off and then finally told us that it was no longer free and tried to charge us. Then when it came to the timeshare, we could never visit any of those resorts because they were always blacked out.”
The married couple was quickly learning about the common issues most timeshare owners experience. They were paying outrageous amounts for this vacation spot but were not even able to use it. Tired of all the lies and scams, James and Faye were ready to officially move on from their timeshare.
