Getting rid of an unwanted timeshare is a very daunting task. When looking for a way out, there will be many “solutions” on the internet, but finding the right solution isn’t always easy when there are so many options. One of our clients, John, wrote about his experience searching for the best way to cancel his timeshare, and which solution he chose. The following client story is told from John’s perspective.
My wife and I began evaluating our timeshare contract and the experience that we had when we signed almost 4 years ago. We were enjoying a nice vacation at our 100% paid off unit when the phone rang. We were invited to a presentation. After several hours we were pressured into upgrading our unit to a “better” unit with a new mortgage. One year later -- when using the upgraded unit and feeling like we were swindled -- we met with them and requested a cancellation of the contract and just wanted our paid for unit back. We were told we couldn’t do that. So we continued to pay the monthly mortgage and of course the maintenance fees.
Three years later I began hearing radio commercials about how timeshares are nearly worthless, are nearly impossible to sell and the best thing is just to get out of the contract and cut your losses.
