Jason H.’s Home Purchase Took Much Longer Because of His Timeshare Mistake

Jason and his fiance Lauren were planning their honeymoon and several of their friends had mentioned how they used a particular company to plan their past and future vacations. From the way their friends told the story, all they had to do was attend a short presentation to prep for their dream honeymoon.

“The meeting was held before we even started on our vacation. I remember thinking it strange, but we showed up at an office park not too far from our home. I don’t remember exactly how long it lasted, but there were a lot less cars in the parking lot and it was dark by the time we’d wrapped up the meeting and agreed to purchase anything.” 

Jason and Lauren were given a lot of perks and freebies to entice them into their timeshare purchase. The salesman told them that they would have access to all kinds of vacation spots, and being on a limited budget as new college graduates, they would be much better off taking this deal than trying to schedule all their vacations on their own. The couple was able to use their initial timeshare for their honeymoon in Mexico right after signing up for it, but their vacation time and opportunity ran out soon after purchasing the timeshare. 

The couple’s honeymoon trip was in 2004, and they have paid over $1,000 per year since then so that the timeshare company wouldn't report them to a credit bureau. They’ve been paying yearly, even though they have not used their timeshare since 2004. Jason purchased his home in 2019, but he reflects on how his determination to purchase a home was ultimately affected by the absurd annual maintenance fees he was paying to the timeshare company. 

“This was a personal goal that had taken years to save up for, but in the back of my head I was still very frustrated paying thousands of dollars in yearly maintenance fees to [the timeshare company] instead of being able to invest those thousands into my new home.”
