Purchasing A Timeshare Turned Hazel & Chris’s Lives Upside Down

Hazel and Chris L. were never interested in buying a timeshare to begin with. After constant pressure from the salespeople, the couple eventually gave in and purchased one. They hoped to make the best out of the situation, but were shocked by the sudden damage to their financial standing. “A salesperson offered us a free two-night stay at an amazing log cabin resort for attending a timeshare presentation. We knew there was no other way we could have afforded the place, and so we took them up on the deal. We listened to their presentation for a few hours before being separated from the other guests to meet individually with the salespeople. That is when things took a turn.” 

Once the salespeople of a timeshare company begin to talk, they never stop. They put their clients through intense and high-pressure situations, which are designed to hinder decision-making.

“We were turning down offer after offer from them, but they just kept on persisting. We told them that we just didn’t have the money, not only for a timeshare but just to travel frequently also. Well, the more salespeople that came in there, the better each offer sounded. By the end of it, we were presented with an offer for a vacation plan that we honestly thought we could afford. We found out that wasn’t the case.”

It’s as if some of these salespeople just come up with a price off the top of their head and then just slowly lower it until they can hook potential clients.

“After purchasing our timeshare, we kept trying to assure one another that it would turn out to be a good thing. Though our initial uneasy feeling about it was correct, because after buying it our finances were in shambles. We felt like we were paying astronomical prices that we never agreed to. We attended owner’s meetings and training sessions at the timeshare, but they all ended up being more sales pitches to get more money out of us. The timeshare was already so expensive we were considering selling our home to help cover our debts.”
