Ricky D. always dreamed of owning his own home and was on a path to reaching it. That was until he found himself stuck in a timeshare sales presentation, leaving his dreams hampered for years to come.
The following is a personal account from Ricky on his experience with the timeshare industry and how they negatively affected his future goals and personal wellbeing. The names of people and places have been changed and/or redacted for privacy reasons.
“I didn’t know that upon my arrival at the resort I would be obligated to sit through a timeshare presentation. There I was approached by four different salespeople, all telling me about all the benefits of a timeshare but also making me feel guilty for not being interested. After over three hours there and being promised many perks and exclusives, I was coerced into the purchase.”
Timeshares are typically sold with a bag of “goodies” if you will. Whether it’s a discount, exclusive deal, an additional free trip, or whatever else the salesperson can come up with at the time. Chances are though, that none of them ever come to fruition and are only used as another tactic of the salespeople.
“Purchasing a timeshare only resulted in personal hardships for me. It caused me to take away money from other responsibilities of my life just to meet the monthly payment requirements. Whenever I was worried about being late for a payment and reached out to the resort for help, they would guilt me even more by threatening a negative effect on my credit score. I was always so stressed about my credit because of this, and I knew the timeshare was not only a burden for me at the present but would continue to be in my future also.”
Ricky never seemed to be very happy with his timeshare purchase to begin with, but when he saw how bad it was hurting his chances of buying a house he knew something had to change.
“Not only did the timeshare prevent me from being able to save up enough money to put a down payment on a house, but also every realtor I spoke to told me I should get rid of my timeshare to become a better candidate for a house purchase. If I had never got stuck in this obligation, then I would have benefited greatly and my chances of owning a home would be much, much higher.”
After several years of paying excessively high costs for his timeshare, Ricky knew something had to give. So after reading through the many stories of our past clients here at Wesley Financial Group, LLC, he knew we were the right company for him. We know how excited he was to see his agreement finally terminated and be relieved of over $8,000 in timeshare mortgage debt along the way.* We wish the best for Ricky as he can now pursue his dream again of owning a home and not having to worry about the burden of a timeshare ever again.
