“I had to have some dental work done, and it required an overnight stay at a hotel since the surgery was to be done in another city. We didn’t want to fight interstate traffic on the morning of the surgery, so my friend Cathy and I decided to book a hotel room in Orlando to keep the stress as low as possible.”
The following is a written account of how Bonnie and her friend were tricked into purchasing a timeshare that they never even got to use. Names of people have been changed and/or redacted for privacy reasons.
Bonnie and her friend Cathy were simply looking for a place to stay the night before a significant dental surgery, but it turned into much more after they were approached with an enticing multi-day vacation. The catch? The friends had to attend a “quick” 90 minute presentation for their free stay and a gift card. They took the salesman up on the offer, but it actually took several attempts of calling to get their initial free visit booked.
“It took several times of calling to even get that initial weekend scheduled. We finally got the weekend scheduled, but only because we told them to cancel the whole thing. Then they called us back and stated that they had gotten approval by the ‘higher ups’ to let us stay at the hotel for 4 days and 3 nights. So we took the offer.”
The pushy sales kept continuing and Bonnie and Cathy were eventually sold a timeshare option as well as a credit card for their down payment on the timeshare. Bonnie says the salesman sold the timeshare to them as “property” and that a “deed” came with the purchase.
“Let me be clear, we were led to believe that our “deeded property” would be available to us when we were ready for our vacations. We were not aware that we would still have to pay to stay at the resort, since we were already paying for our ‘property’ every day of every month and year for the next 15 years!”
As soon as they purchased the timeshare, the problems naturally arose with it.
“Once all the paperwork was completed and we decided to get our money’s worth out of the property we had just purchased, Cathy decided to call and book a vacation. She asked if I would check the day, though, because she was unable to get anything when she tried.
I attempted to book a vacation and was told there was nothing available and I needed to book 6 months in advance. She then told me that I could book something within four months, if I upgraded to a longer stay.”
