As a widow with many children and grandchildren, Danielle is accustomed to traveling a lot with her family. When she and her late husband purchased a timeshare nearly two decades ago, Danielle anticipated spending a lot of valuable family time with everyone on amazing family vacations. She looked forward to making even more memories as grandchildren and extended family entered the picture, too!
The following is a firsthand account about Danielle’s deceptive timeshare experience. We hope her story will help shed a light on the distrustful practices of the timeshare sales industry. Names have been changed or redacted due to privacy concerns.
Danielle and her late husband purchased the timeshare in the late 1990’s. Since then, Danielle
has hardly been able to enjoy the timeshare because of various obstacles, including booking and availability, personal health issues and the passing of her late husband. However, Danielle and her late husband decided to purchase the timeshare back in the 90’s based on one popular misconception told by timeshare salesmen: the infamous “easy buyback” option.
“[The salesmen] LIED to us! They said that their company would purchase it back if we ever wanted to sell it. We kept having to pay more and more money the few times we used it. They told us it was easy to book vacations whenever and wherever we wanted (also a lie), but when we told them [the timeshare] wasn’t what we thought it would be, they wouldn’t buy it back. Wrong!”
After experiencing the death of her husband a few years ago now, Danielle once again tried to book a getaway for herself, her children and grandchildren to enjoy in honor of her late husband. She knew it was what he would want for the family, but she simply couldn’t find any availability. The timeshare she was still paying for two decades later was essentially worthless to Danielle and her family!
This was the final straw for Danielle. She’d been dealing with this pesky timeshare for over two decades. Enough was enough! Danielle began researching ways out of her timeshare, but many of the timeshare cancellation teams had fees and services comparable to that of the timeshare companies themselves!
