Janice Was Told Her Timeshare Would Be An Investment, Instead It Has Caused Her Sleepless Nights

Below is a word for word account of the timeshare nightmare that Janice experienced. We hope her written account will shed some light on the tactics that the timeshare industry often uses on good, unsuspecting people. *Names of people have been changed and/or redacted for privacy reasons.

 

Janice J. Client Story

 

“I was offered free nights stay at a resort, offered money, credit cards, cruises, vacations to islands, Alaska, and other countries to purchase the timeshare. They asked me a lot of personal questions and put pressure on me to buy NOW. They lasted up to 8 hours sometimes. I was promised that the timeshare would be a great investment, and that I could make money renting or selling it. They told me I could use my points to help pay for maintenance fees, which was a lie. The presentations were also supposed to answer questions that I had, but it was all about buying more points. The salesperson knew I wanted to take a trip to Alaska, and informed me I needed to own 30k points in order to go on the trip. I ended up purchasing the timeshare and entered into a world of trouble. 

 

It got to the point where I had difficulty paying my yearly maintenance fees, because they increased immensely every year. I had to use credit cards, points and savings to pay for them. Sometimes, I even borrowed money from family and loan companies.

 

This financial burden has caused me a lot of stress and I cannot sleep worrying about all debts created because of the timeshare. It has also caused me health problems. Along with these hardships, I was hit by Hurricane Irma which took my savings, plus borrowed money and used credit cards. I had to pay to have new floors put in, a new roof, furniture, walls inside and out replaced all from the flooding. 

 

This was all very stressful financially, so I wrote a letter for help to the timeshare and was ignored for a long period of time. When they finally returned my call, I was basically laughed at and told I could try again by giving more personal information on money accounts, etc., or just forget it. 

 

I was lied to about so many things throughout the timeshare process. I was lied to about the cost of yearly maintenance fees, which were always higher than what I was told. I was told I could use points to pay for the maintenance fees, and now I am told I can only use points if I am Platinum status. The rules of the Club are always changing. I was told I could sell the timeshare or rent it and make money, but the rental income was taken away. I am paying over $20,000 a year for the timeshare points, there is not much left for vacation or to pay my other bills.

 

I even received an email from the timeshare company stating they would ruin my credit if I secured a company to cancel my contracts with them. I hadn't even indicated any such thing at the time."
